Biography Vishwa R. Mehra, conservation scientist and art restorer

Vishwa Raj Mehra (1931–2021) graduated from the College of Art at the University of Calcutta in India. He began his career as an artist and worked as a lecturer at the School of Art in Shimla, before pursuing postgraduate studies in the conservation of paintings at the Ljubljana Academy in Slovenia. From 1962 to 1964, he continued his studies and practical research in Vienna and Rome.

Subsequently, he worked as a consultant for UNESCO and led an archaeological restoration in Masada, Israel, from 1964 to 1966. In 1966, he continued his career as a conservation scientist at the Central Laboratory for Research of Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam, where he established the Department of Applied Research for the Restoration of Paintings. There, he developed an alternative approach to conventional restoration techniques for canvas paintings, based on the philosophy of minimal intervention. He argued unrelentingly that lining — and restoration in general — should be entirely reversible, avoiding any structural change. He pioneered the resulting cold lining technique and developed the triple-stretcher low-pressure table. Mehra’s ground-breaking work was presented at seminal conferences, including the Greenwich Conference on Comparative Lining Techniques in 1974 and the ICOM-CC conferences in Madrid (1972) and Zagreb (1978). His research on restoration methods was published in numerous articles for ICOM. Present-day conservation scientists continue to expand on his work.

As a practitioner, Mehra also supervised or consulted on the restoration of significant works of art in major museum collections, including paintings by Van Gogh and Rembrandt, the Panorama Mesdag, as well as numerous church paintings, such as the wooden panel paintings in the Grote Kerk in Naarden and various frescoes in Italy.

Following his formal career, he gave many lectures and taught numerous courses and workshops across Europe, the United States, and Canada, passing on his knowledge to a new generation of restorers. Today, his philosophy and methods are taught by various institutes and have become common practice among restorers worldwide.
